Attn Airline Gurus: I need help on Euopean flight

I need to fly one-way from Zurich to Chicago in Feb/ March. My dates are quite flexible.

I would like to fly on SWISS because of miles and it is non-stop.

ORD * Zurich * ORD costs $430

Zurich *ORD* Zurich costs $880

Can I buy the ORD *Zurich *ORD ticket, and use only the second half, without using the first?

I wonder why the same flights cost twice as much when originating from Zurich as opposed to Chicago.

Is Chicago really such a hot-spot destination for Europeans in the winter?

Hi Queenie,

I would call the airline. You could tell them that you have a sick relative who might be dying and that you might not make the flight to Zurich.

The airlines are threatening to not let you on the return flight if you don't use the outbound portion.

If you are a US citizen you can fly one way into the US. If you are a non US citizen there are restrictions.
As far as using segments out of order..you will more than likely get denied boarding. They will refigure your ticket as originating in ZRH instead of ORD. Taxes will be different as well.
My best advise if you are set on Swiss is to check around. For example Orbitz might have same fare cheaper than buying it through Swiss because they have the right inventory available at that fare. What you might want to do is ask the rules of the fare and make sure you can earn miles. Not all discounted fares will allow you to accrue miles.
Best of luck.

Your return will AUTOMATICALLY be canceled if you do not make the outbound. It's simple as that. End of story.

Orbitz will not price anything originating outside of US.

Their European sister site www.opodo.com will.

Expedia and Traveloity are worth a look as well.

Also, make sure the return is at lease a week later and if your oubound is on a Friday, make the return a week + later on a Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday. Since you won't be using the return pick the least expensive day of the week.

Did you try AA?

I'm not sure how long of a train trip it would be from Zurich to Frankfurt, but you may find cheaper fares there. Frankfurt - US is a very competative route.

Good luck!

They cost more because there isn't that much traffic between Zurich and the US in mid-winter. You need to start at, or route through a significant hub (LHR or AMS for example) in order for the prices to come down.

That said, you don't say what mileage plan you use, but if it was me I'd look at Aer Lingus (a oneworld member that may qualify for miles on Swiss, certainly on AA depending on fare class). One way from ZRH to DUB ought to be around €100, under €200 one-way DUB-ORD. Not the world's most comfortable airliners, but they happily sell one-way tix and the price isn't that bad.
