ATM's Vienna, how many numbers?

WE have used ATM's throughout Europe in the past and from the posts we will use them in Vienna and Prague. Are the PIN numbers 4 letters/numbers?

Hi S,

Four numbers. I don't recall letters on the keypads.

I got money at banks with my ATM using 4 numbers. No problems at all in Austria.

Same was true in Switzerland, Germany, Finland, France, Italy, and the UK.

I used a Visa debit card too many times to count in ATMs (Bankomats) there. But I always make sure to use an ATM outside a bank when the bank is open. That way, should the ATM retain the card (which has never happened), then I will know where to report it and get it back quickly.

Another thing. Don't wait for the ATMs in Austria to give you a receipt.
None that I've ever used will provide one. All you can do is check your account on-line OR hope its correct when you get your statement back home.

The machines also give you very large denominations. Here (US) the machines are stocked with $20s. So if you ask for $200, you get 10 $20s. There, you get the equivalent of 2 $100.

Just a pain, not much you can do about it since it's best to take large amounts out at once to keep fees down.

As for the receipts, there's not even a receipt dispenser on the machines.

gnrbernstein, the trick is to ask for € 190 instead of € 200 so you will get smaller notes. Most ATMs allow you to type in the amount you want. You just have to select the button "Anderer Betrag" (= different amount).
