ATMs in Italy

Actually I have withdrawn from a number of ATMs in Italy and not been charged anything by Bank of America either. It is one country where BofA was unable to provide me with a list of "cooperative" banks, but still a number of the ones I used didn't even get me a charge from B of A.
And others are right. No European bank is going to charge you to use their ATM. Any charges are coming from your bank in the US.

I certainly like everyone's suggestions to get with my bank and try to get the ATM fees waived! Having said that...
If you take enough cash for several days (I usually take my daily limit of $350US per transaction), because you get a good exchange rate, even a $2-3 fee is not a deal-breaker for me, for the safety and convenience of getting cash (in appropriate local currency) on a trip.
