ATM near San Marco, Venice

My strong preference for cash advances on my debit card abroad is to utilize ATM’s inside banks. Is anyone aware of a bank near San Marco in Venice that has an ATM inside? Our apartment is on the northwest corner of the square.

Thanks in advance…bdj

There are lots of ATM's round and about San Marco, although I'm not sure why you want to be inside. I presume that you're concerned about theft and there are lots of banks in the side streets from San Marco where I'm sure that you'll find what you are looking for. However, as long as you don't wave your notes about in the air, you'll be OK in Venice.

We've used mainly outside ATM's without any problem. jUst use it like you would anywhere and be discreet.

There are a number of issues beyond theft that can cause considerable concern, particularly those that could be potentially addressed via bank personnel, i.e., a card that is not returned, cash not properly dispensed, an ambiguous error code, etc. For those who have had such an unfortunate experience, the advantage of an inside ATM is so obvious it requires no further elaboration.

Would anyone be aware of a bank close San Marco that would have an ATM inside...even the name of a bank that can google-mapped would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance...bdj

I don't think I have ever seen an inside ATM in Europe.Well maybe 1 in London but nowhere else. All of the ATMs even at the banks are on a outside wall.I think there is a bank just west of San Marco on the other side of the museum but their ATM is definitely outside.I think it would be the same thing as long as it is during banking hours it does not matter if it is inside or out. I suggest you bring 2 cards with you. That is what DH and I do.

Italian banks, especially those in Venice, have that one-person-at-a-time buzzer/entry system. Such a security system is not conducive to housing indoor ATMs. Banks in Venice use very little real estate.

There is a bank on the Zattere where the ATM is in what might be called a vestibule. You get buzzed in to use the ATM and you get buzzed in further to enter the bank, if you need to see a teller.

Stories about ATM machines eating cards do exist, although I've never experienced this issue. The strategy I use is visit the ATM during banking hours and never on weekends. If anything goes wrong, a human being is there to assist you.

I know of no banks in Venice that offer ATM's in the interior of the bank but the Post Office at St. Mark's use to be a great resource for a decent exchange rate. They might have an indoor ATM. I haven't been there recently.

If you go to the Unicredit website, you can search for all Unicredit bancomat in Venice, the click "visualizza tutti i servizi" and it will indicate services offered at that location and if the ATM is inside or outside.

Thanks for the replies. Regarding the post office at St. Marks, can one obtain a cash advance there via an American credit/debit card?

Back in the day, the St. Mark's post office offered a great exchange rate and not many people knew they offered this service. Since the evolution of the ATM, I haven't needed to exchange in recent years and I have no idea what they do today.

I'm not sure what you mean by the term "cash advance." That term usually means you get cash against a credit limit and then pay a very high interest rate/fee for "borrowing" the money. I don't do cash advances of any kind so I can never answer questions about such a service.
