we are a family of ten, arriving in two batches in Athens.

6 of us arrive at 2pm on Emirates flight from Dubai

4 of us arrive at 2:40pm on Emirates flight from Larnaca

We need to book our onward flight to Chania. The flight in contention is the Olympic airlines flight at 5:00pm.

question - is it too close for us to book this flight with 3hrs for one group and only 2hrs20mins for the other group?

how much time does it usually take to get out of the international arrivals - immigration/baggage pickup and get to domestic departure and check in again?

Olympic airlines says their counters close 30mins before departure, that gives one group 2hrs30mins and the other group 1hr20mins to finish all arrival formalities. that good enough?

I would say that's enough time, especially if you check in online and print out your boarding passes ahead of time. You can check in online up to 48 hours in advance. That way you don't need to line up at the counter, just leave your bags at the drop-off point where they will tag them and attach a stub to your boarding pass. Then all you have to do is walk straight to the departure gate, going through security in domestic departures.

There is always a risk that one of the inbound flights will be delayed, but apart from that, even 2 hrs is enough time. Suggest you book all the flights "Flex" rather than "GoLight". Flex fares are only a few euros more than GoLight + 1 bag, and offer more protection.
