Has anybody visited Arundel? Is it worth a visit & why?

It rather depends on where you would be travelling from. I personally don't think it is worth a trip, but it may be worth a stop on the way somewhere else. The castle and surroundings are picturesque. There is very little to the town apart from places selling antiques and places to eat.

Hello Eric, I found a site www.arundelcastle.org gives good pictures and information. It is near Gatwick, Brighton(seacoast)so could be part of a larger plan. Joyce

I stopped at the hostel in town 30 years ago while cycling across southern England. Didn't go to the castle because it was closed that day. It is impressive from the outside

Eric:
We spent 2 nights in Arundel at the end of an England trip in 1995. It was a relaxing way to end our trip. We stayed in the Dukes Hotel across from the castle in town in the honeymoon suite (cheaper than our tiny room we had in London). The castle was reconstructed in the 1800's but is still impressive. The best things about the town were the Wildfowl Refuge within walking distance from town and the pleasant river running through town. It is also an easy train ride back to London Gatwick airport. It is definitely worth a visit if you need a break from London or exploring the south of England.

Eric,
My husband and I stayed there a couple of years ago in October. We journied there from Glastonbury in the morning and at the recommendation of our B & B host. We were short on castle visits with only a few days left in England. It was beautiful, a living castle where royalty still lived and have family pictures strewn about after the hall of portraits. We stayed in the same hotel that Terry stayed in... plaster ceilings, huge bathtub and views of the castle wall right outside the window. It afforded the type of imagery that drew you into wondering what lay around the bend. The river and rolling hills were out of picture book. If you like that sort of thing I guess it's worth it.
Have fun wherever the river leads you.
Dr. Betty
