Arhanes, Crete- anyone stayed there?

We are looking for a nice place but not expensive to see the Minoan excavations on Crete. Someone suggested Arhanes and it looks very good. Any other suggestions? Any places to recommend in Arhanes or elsewhere?

We tried to get into Villa Arhanes
http://www.greekhotel.com/crete/hera...hanes/home.htm but it was booked (only called a few days in advance). Had read good things about it. The town itself was nice and we enjoyed spending the better part of the afternoon exploring it and the surrounding sites.

Arhanes is a perfect selection. Have not been there myself but one of our club members has and has raved about it ever since. It is becoming more and more difficult to experience real Greece these days but I think you can here

I stayed in one of the 3 villas of Archanes. I reccommend this place by hearth. Very nice hosts and good location.

Happy Travelling,
Murat

I can recommend White River Cottages in Makriyialos, located in the southeast portion of the island. The closest towns aren't too interesting, but you are withing driving distance to some great touristy & non-touristy places- Vai beaches, Xanthos Beach (which is gorgeous), the city of Sitia, Pefki.... the accomodations are so traditionally cute.
