Are we the only people who chain our luggage in the compartment at the end of the train?

I don't mean to sound unsympathetic but a wallet does not belong in a suitcase, ever! If my suitcase was stolen it would be a big pain replacing clothes and toiletries but there would be nothing of value or security (like ID or credit cards) to worry about.
I've not tried it but have seen cables used (in a hotel lobby) to chain several suitcases to each other, providing security that way. That seemed a clever idea.

Rick Steves mentions in his tour books that luggage theft on Italy trains is a problem.I was going to post the question if people found this to be true! He always recommends a sleeper car on the night trains because of the theft problem.We will be traveling from Florence to Munich on a night train, but don't want to pay the more expensive amount for a sleeper.I think a cable is a great idea!

monique- Have you taken an overnight train before in shared quarters? I second the Rick Steves recommendation for a private cabin, not because of safety but privacy and to be able to get as good a night's sleep as is possible on a train. It's well worth the money imo. If I couldn't afford it I'd take a day train or flight instead.

Bear in mind that it is not always possible to secure your luggage. Going from Gatwick to Victoria Station in London a few years ago with a 26 inch suitcase, the end of the train car was so crowded with luggage that all I could do was pile my suitcase on top of others and hope for the best.
I've since downsized to a 22 inch suitcase. On a trip in Germany last fall, I wanted to secure it to the overhead rack with a retractable ski lock I brought along but the rack was made of glass and there was no way to secure the suitcase to the rack. For what its worth, I felt a lot safer leaving my suitcase unattended in Germany than in some of the other countries I've visited.
