Are train station lockers safe?

I will have a short stop in Brussels for a few hours and would like to take a cab downtown. Is it save to leave luggage locked in a locker? I hear this is a busy area for pickpockets. What do you suggest I do short of carrying by luggage downtown with me.

Don't know about the lockers, but I've had no problem checking my bags for the day at the station. I think you can check them in Brussels. Anyone?

I've used them safely many times but I have seen warnings posted about people watching when you use the more modern coded ones and then somehow gaining access by telling the station staff the code but saying it isn't responding...not sure how that all works but just be careful of overly interested onlookers.
