Are there ATMs on the Amalfi Coast?

Hello. In May, my husband and I will be in Rome for a week and then staying on the Amalfi Coast in Sorrento, Positano and Ravello (mainly the latter 2 towns). I am wondering if there are any ATMS in Positano or Ravello or anyplace else around there. If not, I am thinking we should withdraw enough cash before we leave Rome.

I've used an ATM in Positano. No problema! Wherever there are banks in Italy, you'll find ATM's.
I used an ATM in Amalfi (I believe Monte dei Paschi di Siena OR San Paolo Bank, but I could be mistaken)

Hi Daria. Just an FYI. When my girlfriend & I were there about a year ago, none of the ATMS in Sorrento were working on the day, Saturday, we arrived. A guy we talked to who seemed knowledgeable said that the system serving that area had gone down. We had to leave our hotel fairly early the next morning and they didn't take any credit cards so, thankfully, we had traveler's checks since we had not gotten enough cash in Rome before leaving for Sorrento.

By the time we got to Positano later on Sunday, an ATM we found there was working but the moral of the story is: while an occurence like this is probably quite rare, it never hurts to have some cash or traveler's checks as a backup, just in case something like this happens.

I used an ATM is Positano just last week, Daria. But Capo is right. You never know when those buggers WILL be working and seeing as you will be in a rather limited area I'd consider a back-up with traveler's checks or just credit cards. Though I will tell you I had a harder time getting use out of my traveler's checks this trip than ever before (and yes, they were AE). Merchants just did not want to bother with them and I ended up using our card a lot and then converting some of the checks for cash at a bank.

Have fun! Positano is lovely. Stop for fresh oranges at one of the local stands. Yum.

I just spent a week in Sorrento, using it as a base to see the Amalfi Coast. I had no trouble using my ATM card, however, there was one night the entire system in Sorrento went down for maintenance overnight. I think it was Saturday or Sunday, and it seemed to be a normal occurrence that the locals just adapted to. I would be sure never to run completely out of cash just to cover yourself, and I did have $300 in travelers checks just in case. The best place to cash them, by the way, was the Hotel Nice, on the corner of Corso Italia in front of the train station. We were getting 1.08 last week, with no commission.

Amy
