I forgot about that table! I was amazed at that piano he had made for Wagner and he never saw it.

If your not sure if the castles are worth it and like to hike why not stop in Elmau or Garmisch-Parenkirchen and hike to "The Kings's House on Schachen" Small but lavishly decorated. Not a castle but I think very interesting.

PAYE,

Every time I see those calendar shots of Neuschwanstein, I feel sad because when I was there I did not see the mountains or the lakes because of torrential rains (July 2008). All that was visible from where we stood were the crowds and the wall of the castle. If I recall, we took a conveyance of sorts up the hill. The few inside rooms were interesting – Ludwig loved Wagner!

But returning down the hill was scary. Foolishly, I was wearing Clark backless sandals. There was a brass railing to hold on to, but it was slippery and of little use with the rain. I was thrilled to reach the bottom.

My only suggestion – chose a clear day to view the castle and enjoy…

Hohenschwangau was interesting because it was where he spent a lot of time as he was growing up. Neuschwanstein is the "fantasy" castle, his bedroom was amazing. The view from his bedroom was of the Marienbruke (sp?), wow. Linderhof was another that we saw and was well worth the visit, the gardens there were beautiful (even in the pouring rain).

Sure there were no historical events at his castles (battle-wise) but we thought that they were well worth the cost of entry to all of them.
