I would go visit your bank, first thing in the morning, and get an ATM card.

Best wishes,

Rex

Paris -

Some small shops do, some don't. Same with cabs. Buses, no - but you can use a CC to buy RATP tickets (good for subway, bus, train, and tram) at Métro stations.

and it depends on WHICH card, and if it is a shop, some do not take them on sale items..

always need foto I.D. to use card in spain.

gas stations DO take them everywhere, and they also have mini markets in them.

cinemas not usually.
all travel agencies do.

alos, for a nominal fee in spain, a travel agency will make your train reservations and avoid spending HOURS in lines to get tickets.
sometimes the train stations are just clogged with people buying tickets.

you can also reserve on phone and leave credit card number and pick up your tickets in customer service up to a few hours before train leaves.

Don't even think about going to Europe without an ATM card or Visa Debit card, and use it to get all of your cash. See any thread on currency exchange and you'll find the same advice.

Hi sb,

Get an ATM card ASAP. You will need some cash.

Get an ATM card! I rarely use a credit card traveling, except for major expenses. Realize there is a cost to small shops, restaurants, etc. for making credit card transactions. Yes some taxis will accept them. But to try to do every little purchase (bottle of water, sandwich) with a credit card isn't going to work very well.

If for some personal reason you really don't want an ATM card (though I can't imagine why), then plan to bring U.S. cash or travelers checks and exchange into Euro at the airport or bank once you arrive.

I agree you should get an ATM card unless you don't have a bank account (although I don't think you could get a CC without one). If not, do the same thing people did before ATMs, as Suze says -- get some travelers checks. Get them in your own currency, not euro, as you'll get better exchange rates in Europe that way than you would when buying them abroad in euro, and you don't have to worry if you have leftovers.

YOu cannot travel and use a credit card for every single thing you buy, this isn't realistic. Many places will have minimums on purchase amounts in order to use them, also. Don't expect to sit down and order a drink for a couple euro in a cheap cafe and use a credit card, nor to buy a magazine, etc.
