Not only is hetismij2 correct about the fuel but also consider that you're not going to be zipping around all that much. You're also going to be parking on little streets.
Last year we went to the Alps and ended up with a dinky little Renault, I was surprised that it was fairly zippy. If you rent a sensible car, it's not like driving in the states where you might be the smallest car on the freeway. (I should say, "it's not like it used to be driving..." because people seem to be getting saner about their cars. At least in CA.

On the other hand.. you really don't need to get the tiniest 'dinkiest' car possible. I have driven a VW van all over Europe
as well as a high top campervan. No problems... aside from height restrictions in garages with the latter.
More recently we drove a Passat over 2,500 km in France. Again, never got stuck in a narrow alley, never found it too big to park. It was fast, fun to drive and got over 1,000 km on a tank of diesel so it was inexpensive to drive.
Most of all, it was large enough for 3 of us to be comfortable and all our luggage was out of site. There are many vehicles
on the roads that are much larger and have no problems. Don't get hung up on getting something tiny... you're on holiday so
get something comfortable and fun.

I note the above post that states luggage was 'out of site' (sight)... which is good. Our hatchback 'wagons' have a cover that slides over the luggage, making it unseen by passers-by. This is an important feature for us.

i think they all have that, simpson.
a good tip when parking is to reverse hard up against a wall or a tree so that the tailgate can't be opened. you have to make sure that you've got everything out of the boot that you need and put everything in it that you want to cover up, of course.

The car we rented in France this last May was a hatchback with no cover. The good news: it did have tinted windows in the back so you couldn't see in very well. The bad news: a large sticker saying "Another happy Europcar driver" decorated the back window.

oh dear, mimar - sorry about that. i'm really surprised that your hatchback had no cover for the boot - i thought they came as standard. perhaps they make ones without specially for the rental market!
