Apartment suggestions for Mittenwald

We have decided to use Mittenwald as a base for 6 days in May 2009 using only public transport. We like the idea of doing some day trips, like a visit to Insbruck, Hall in Tirol and Seefeld, catching th 9606 (thanks Artstuff)bus to Linderhof, doing lots of walking if the weather permits and just chilling out when we feel like it. There is also a bus day tour that goes to the Dolomites if we feel like it.

We had decided to stay at the Alpenrose Hotel but now I am thinking that we could do better, price wise, by staying in an apartment.I have spent countless hours looking at www.mittenwald.de for accommodations and my head is spinning, there is just do many of them! Does anyone have any suggestions? We need a one bedroom apartment and would love a balcony with a view to the mountains and of course walking distance to the Bahnhof.

Many thanks in advance.

One of my Fodorite friends stayed in Mittenwald last year and was quite happy with the apartment. I believe it was the upstairs apartment of this house:

Hi Maudie (& Ingo!),

Yes, I'm the one who rented that wonderful Fichtl apartment in Mittenwald. I stayed for one month and could not have been happier!! When I left, I gave my hostess an angel ornament because she had been a true angel to me. Great, great folks.

One thing I really loved about the place is its location -- only two blocks to the center of the village with its many shops and cafes. It really is just about the most central apartment I could find.

One caveat, though, is that the hostess spoke no English at all, and I spoke no German. She didn't want to rent to me at all because of the language difficulty, and it was a tough job to convince her to let me rent it. I don't know if she still feels the same way.

I hope you find a great one!

Hi Ingo and Swandav, thank you for your replies and I do remember reading that it was you who had stayed in an apartment. That looks perfect, just the sort of thing I was after. I found this one when I was searching again last night:

We do not speak German either and I have been trying to find ones that have English on their sites but there are very few of them indeed. Well I guess I can just fire off some emails, keep my fingers crossed and see what response I get.

Thanks again for your reples.

Maudie - this one looks nice, too. I don't think it is as quiet as they claim, though. Quite close to the railroads.

I wouldn't worry too much about not speaking German. Most Germans do speak at least a little English. And then there's still hands and feet ;-)

Thanks Ingo, I spent another couple of hours looking again today and have a few more on our maybe list.

Yes, I think you are right about the lanuage issue, but its a bit overwhelming trying to understand everything and putting the possibilities though a web translator. Some of the apartments look like they are still in the 70's and some look quite modern. And we are also trying to find one, if possible, that is non-smoking. Oh well I will keep looking, I am sure something will come up that seems perfect.
