Anyone ridden the slides at Tate Britain?

Very interesting article about the Tate and MOMA. I had a similar negative reaction to the new MOMA and I did enjoy the Tate.
My thought about the slides is this: how many of the participants pay tribute to the artist (Holler!) by illustrating his name on the way down?

Thanks. It's funny -- I scrolled back and noticed that people have provided various links.
Anyway, I guess that MoMA/Tate Modern article is interesting -- and this brings the thread to the top.
Speaking of which, I'm on my way to hear Brice Marden talk about his show at MoMA (artist converation series).

I went to Mass MoCA this past weekend - Carsten Holler's Amusement Park was in its final days. It was a return visit to this exhibit for me, but the first time for my daughter. Disappointingly, much/most of it was roped off, so she only got a taste. We're both looking forward to the slides in London.

Watched a longer TV programme about it the other night & definitely don't want to do it. There are now mattresses to land on but it still looks bumpy and various sections of each slide appear to be actually vertical !!

Ah, Caroline - don't be a wuss
I plan on riding them in Feb - (but I might chicken out by then) Nine friends from all over are meeting in London to celebrate some major milestones and we all plan on riding the slides . . . .

I chickened out; the highest one is very high and fast. Various protective gear is provided. My 12-year old thought it was great fun though! 15 min. or so wait for tickets, then she could go on the highest one 40 minutes or so later. The slides do look amazing there, and I could never have persuaded the kids to visit Tate Modern without them; and they did enjoy looking around the museum as well.

janisj, I'm thinking you might be home from your trip. Did the nine of you ride the slides (and if so, what did you think?) Any other tips? - my 21 year old daughter and I leave for London next week.

hi,
Got back last night. Will be a few days before I get my trip report together.
As for the slides - what a kick! Not all of us made it because a one was feeling ill and stayed in the flat most of the day and a couple of others kept her company. But the rest of us rode 5 and 2. The slides are numbered 5 (the tallest), 3 (no longer in operation because another installation conflicts w/ it), 2, and 1 (the shortest and the only one that doesn't require a ticket)
Timed tickets are released 3 times a day and you need to queue for them. Each person has to pick up their own ticket. We decided it would be easiest to go for the 6 p.m. release so it wouldn't conflict w/ other things we might do during the day.
We got in line about 5:25 and there were 8 or 10 ahead of us. By 5:45 there were over 150 people in line. You get 30 minutes from the time of your ticket to make the two slides. Not a problem IF you have someone to hold your handbags/packs etc. But if you need to check them, be sure to do that early cuz the check room is congested and you won't have time to check them and get two both slides. We got 6:00 tickets - and by the time we finished riding, all that night's tickets were gone.
We hit #5 first and it is fast and a bit bumpy towards the top. But not scary - you don't go upside down or anything. I was pretty dizzy at the bottom and practically had to crawl off the landing mat. If it had been possible I think all of us would have ridden 5 again. The #2 slide is fast too, but not not nearly as long. I was less dizzy on that one - but it is a quicker ride and has its own thrills.
If one of you doesn't want to ride, have them stand near the landing mats and get pix/video of you landing. One of our guys went first each time and as soon as he jumped off the mat he pulled his camera out of his shirt pocket and quickly shot each of us coming out of the slide. They are really funny - but he didn't have a chance to get set so not as good as they'd be if he had been standing there (and wasn't still spinning himself
)
Be sure to keep your arms crossed w/ your hands on your shoulders - otherwise your elbows might hit the walls and that would hurt. The attendants give you good instructions as you climb in the tube.
