Anyone been to Tropea?

We have booked a waterfront villa in the city of Tropea in Calabria because the pictures in the catalog looked soooo spectacular, but I know nothing about this area except that it was apparently founded by Hercules.<BR>Anyone been to Tropea?

I myself have not been to Calabria. From what I have heard it is a major destination for Italians on holiday, partcularly in August. My cousins that live outside Naples have a house there and spend every summer there. From the pictures I have seen on the web it looks really lovely.

I plan on going there as a daytrip from where I'll be staying with my family as a daytrip in August. If anyone has any questions hopefully I'll be able to answer them when I get back.

My best friend went to Tropea last October and loved it. They ended up staying four extra days. Her pictures are beautiful. She has been to Italy about six times and this was her first to Sicily. She had nothing but good to say. I'll ask her if she stayed there.

I am going to be staying up the coast in Maratea in 3 weeks, but plan on visiting Tropea for the day. I will post a trip report, but in the mean time, if slynkyy's friend posts her photos, please let us know!

Tropea is a VERY popular resort and unfortunately in Summer (from June to August, with its peak around august 15 which is ferragosto) it tends to be overcrowded. In october it is great for you can enjoy the place almost all by yourself, but I am afraid to say that in Summer the beaches in Tropea and the surrounding areas are too crowded.
Calabria is a great place for beaches but sadly its roads are awful so in peak season it takes hours to drive on 100 miles: an example is the terrible Salerno-Reggio Calabria, painfully flooded with cars coming from north Italy directed either to Calabria or to Sicily.

We visited Tropea last May. We actually stayed a little further north on the beach in Parghelia. We're returning this year as well. Calabria is beautiful, the ocean is crystal clear, and the people are very friendly. The views are fantastic and on a clear day you can see the island of Stromboli.

Tropea is probably the most touristy of all of the places we visited in Calabria--it has a lot of little shops for picking up souvenirs, etc. Lots of day trips can be made--Reggio Calabria, Crotone, Cosenza, etc. But the main attraction here is the beach.

Not to be too punctilious, but Tropea faces the Tyrrhenian Sea not the Ocean...
sorry....
