We made a stop in Spoleto just before the summer festival. I have read some nice things about the town, but felt sort of uncomfortable there. The center downtown seemed runned down, but not in a pleasant. I didn't feel too safe, but maybe it was because of the festival crowd. At any rate, I was relieved that we were staying in a different town. We stayed in Foligno, but only because we had a coupon for half off at the Holiday Inn Express. I liked Assisi much better, and Perugia, as well. There were a few other Umbrian towns that seemed a little more attractive to me. But, others on this board have reported a good experience there.

We were in spoleto last January and found it a charming city. Of course there weren't any crowds and I think we were the only Americans. We stayed in the upper town and had wonderful days just wandering. I would certainly return. <BR>

I was in Spoletto last March and absolutely loved it. We stayed in the Hotel Gattapone overlooking the ancient roman aquaduct. If you are going in July, make sure you have reservations. there is an international jazz festival going on then and I am sure the town it jammed.

The upper Town (like straight up) is indeed charming. The Roman Aqaduct and the views of the valley below as you hike up to the Aqaduct are well worth while. We liked Spoletto very much.

I liked Spoleto a lot in a small town way. Even if you don't stay up near the Roman aquaduct do go up there. The construction is interesting and attractive and the surrounding truffle areas are interesting, filled with wildflowers. Also, there is a simple bar up there which in most places would be very expensive with surcharges etc because of the view....however it is very reasonable, there are tables and chairs overlooking the valley(outdoors) and they provide a little plate of nibblies (olives etc) with the drinks you purchase. If you do this on a day when you have lots of time and want to relax you will enjoy it and we never felt pressured to move on....sunset is good. There is a nice restaurant beside the ancient ruins back down in the main shopping street....I can't remember its name but we returned several times as we enjoyed the food....not cheap but not expensive either.
