Any More News on USAir

Has anyone heard any more information on US Air's financial status. While I surely do not plan to buy any stock in the corporation I am wondering whether to take a gamble with a ticket to Paris. While I know that using a credit card and buying travel insurance will go a long way toward easing any financial commitment I am also concerned about cancelled flights and most importantly safety (e.g. they must be cutting corners somewhere). Thanks!

I"m holding a ticket for late Feb., and I have no concerns at all; as someone wrote earlier, even if they would fold (highly doubtful) another airline would take over. I live in Pgh. and cannot imagine that we would wake up someday w/o air travel to and from.

If you're getting a good fare to Paris via Philly, go for it. From experience, US Airways is one heck of a lot better carrier than Delta or some others I could name. The big issue with US Airways right now is the attendants' complaint about having to search their regional feeder planes for illegal items prior to flights. They say they are not trained to do this work. I have tickets on US Airways and I am not worried in the least. Did you see that DOT will allow AA and BA to begin working together - I think our airline industry is going to come back just fine. US Airways will need a similar arrangement. Ciao

Hi, Ilene. I travel USAir frequently and admit that rumors abound. However, what I'm finding is that USAir cut way back on its flights after 9/11, particularly from Charlotte, with the result that the remaining flights tend to be full, although the October flight to Germany was only half-full. I believe their plan is to cut flights, not corners. They are also offering vacations now that allow for cancellation and refund up to the last minute. I can appreciate your apprehension, but I think USAir has a good plan in place that will ensure they continue to fly. Even my small town hasn't had USAir cancel any connections. All that being said, I've had my head down recently and don't know if there is any breaking news about them that might change my opinion. Oh, but don't fly out of Baltimore if you can help it. It's always a mess. Have a good trip whatever you decide.

Huh? What's this about USAir? I just purchased 4 Tickets NY to Orlando in March and this is the first I've heard of trouble with US Air. Can anyone clue me in?

Hi Ilene-
I'm a financial advisor and would advise not to book a flight on US Air past the next 6 months. Why? They just reported a loss of $1 billion in the last QUARTER and are burning $5 million per day as we speak. They have $1 billion left in cash reserves so you can do the math. The CFO has already indicated the next quarter (ending March) would produce a "significant loss" which means hundreds of millions. Also, they are one of the highest cost carriers in the business which means bankruptcy is more likely than a buyout. Best case, you may have another airline honor their tickets and frequesnt flier miles but why take a chance? Try to get a ticket on another airline.

Given a choice of airlines, I would fly USAir in a heartbeat.

If you plan a trip to paris use Air France or Lufthansa. Both have a strong unweaken company in backround and their service is different from US-Airways - I promise !
Shain/Germany/Düsseldorf

xxxxx-
You are either a USAir employee or like taking chances. You'd probably buy some Enron stock too. Bring a thick book to read if you fly USAir; you'll definitely get to Chapter 11.

I agree with the analyst.
Stay on the safe side - we have seen what happens to those of Swissair or Sabena recently.
Don't get stuck in the middle of nowhere
just because you would safe some money or earn some points. It's not worth it
Shain/Germany/Düsseldorf
