Any Milan advice? -(hotels/getting around downtown)
My husband and I will be in Milan for 2-1/2 days in late September and would love recommendations for to find a reasonably priced hotel that is either centrally located or at least reasonably close to the main sights (Duomo, Last Supper exhibition, LaScala). I'm not sure what is "reasonable" in Milan but I guess around the $100-150 mark? Also, what's the best way to get around - taxi, bus, train? I'm talking about just going to and from a hotel to the sightseeing, shopping etc that isn't walking distance from the hotel. I get the feeling a lot of Milan is not really for strolling because it's designed for business and apparently the traffic can be horrendous too. Thanks for any suggestions.

This fall I will be staying at the Hotel Gritti, Piazza Santa Maria Beltrade (north end of Via Torino), 39-02-801056 phone/39-02-8901-0999 fax. It has come highly recommended by a friend of mine. I believe that it is in your price range and is very close to the Duomo. As far as getting around, I found that if you stay in the center it's very walkable. Anything outside of that was certainly doable by their subway (metropolitana - very easy to use - check the Milan website) and taxis. Depending on where you are, I didn't think the traffic was any worse than Rome (or Florence for that matter). Hope you enjoy your stay!

This question has been asked and answered a lot here, so if you would like more suggestions, try a search to pull up old topics. We stayed at Antica Locanda dei Mercanti just 2 blocks from the Duomo. It's on a small pedestrian only side street. Prices were reasonable for Milano, we paid about $95 US for 2 people, 2 beds in May 2000. This small hotel is recommended in Fodor's County Inns of Charm. Extremely helpful English-speaking staff (if that matters to you). Room was very small as was the bath, BUT we voted it best beds/linens of the 3 week trip. Devine! Important note: the Metro closed at 7:30 p.m. - were we ever surprised! We found taxis the easiest way to/from Milano Norte (where the express train arrives from Malpensa) and to Milano Centrale. Prices were not high. Have a great time!

Spent a day/night in Milan last November prior to return to US. Stayed at the London Hotel on Via Rovello, which is a quiet little side street and within walking distance of the Duomo, Galleria, La Scala & Sforesco Castle. And within the city centre (sites I've just mentioned), it is as pedestrian friendly as any other major Italian city. Milan has a great & extensive subway/tram system.

London Hotel is a small hotel --- like many in Milan, caters primarily to business travelers. It was reasonably priced, certainly within your price range. Nothing fancy, not a whole lot of 'charm', but I was comfortable there.
