Antibes as a base?

We are going to the Riviera in September. Should we stay in Antibes? I'm having some trouble finding a nice hotel there ($100-$150) Any suggestions on hotels in Antibes or nearby?

Barry, I was there last year and just walked over to Antibes from Juan Les Pins. Antibes was certainly nicer than Juan but if doing it over again I would probably base in Nice and explore more. Wish I had a recommendation for you but I don't remember the hotels I saw there. You might do a search on this board for french riviera and get some ideas on other places to base and maybe do a daytrip to Antibes.

In 1997, I stayed at L'Auberge Provencale in the old town section of Antibes. I don't think they have a website. We enjoyed the location. Auberge was inexpensive -- so much so you could ask for one of their larger rooms which are very large. We were within a minute's walk of many lovely restaurants and shops. The pastry shops were incredible -- better than what I found in Paris. There is a free carpark nearby, which came in handy as we rented a car for several days.

Thanks for the advice. I am now considering staying in Nice based on some posts I read. I just wonder how easy it is to get in and out with a car there (which was my original reason for staying in Antibes).

Barry. We stayed at a three star hotel in St. Jean Cap Ferrat in 1999 in that price range, Le Panoramic. We found it recommended in a guide book. The view of the harbor was spectacular. The room was very large, with a balcony. All rooms faced the water, I believe. One caution:
The room decor and furnishings were dated, and, the hotel mishandled our reservation. We booked a room with a "coin salon," sitting area, months in advance by travel agent in writing, and it was not available when we arrived (It seems the French treat hotel reservations, from their end, as suggestions, rather than contractual obligations. At check-out we were presented a bill for the larger room, doubtless a mistake).
Nevertheless, our standard room was plenty large. Cap Ferrat is a short drive to Antibes, Cannes, Monte Carlo, Eze, Nice, Italy. Cap Ferrat is also considered among the most exclusive areas of the French riveria and has villas that are oppulent by royal standards. Very good restaurants right on the water.

I just booked a condo in antibes the site is
http://locations.pierre-vacances.fr
I have never stayed there but someone who posted on the aol travel site has booked condos with this organizatin many times. They have condos all over the french riviera. The nice part about it is that you get a kitchena and a sitting area. I had to take the largest condo with a jacuzzi in antibes because it was such short notice. The apt costs less $950 for the week. The prices come down from there. Parking is $240 francs for the week.

I prefer antibes to Nice. It is just personal preference. They have condos in Ville Franch other places. Good Luck
