I am so with you on this. I tried one of those kidney shaped, supposed to be good for your back, bags, a cross-body safety bag, a back pack with zipper to the back, etc. etc. Finally realized I hated them all and gave them all away. Now I take a bag I like and enjoy using. Depending on where I am going and the time of year, it might be a colorful cotton for the Carribean, green leather for Italy or black for Paris.
I do like shoulder straps so if I am in a crowd and feel a bit nervous, I can put it in front, but I guess everybody has to figure out what works for them.

I feel sure most travelers have looked at least one pack safe purse in travel stores and know what they are. Some probably felt great that they found it. Others simply made the decision that they did not need one. Neither are stupid or less informed; their security comfort levels are just different.
