I can remember a time when the Internet was young and LOL (Laughing Out Loud) was used only as a response to somebody else's amusing comments. The smiley face was used to denote "only joking, folks." Now people use LOL to comment on their own posts, as if they're laughing at their own jokes.

Oldtimer, I think there have always been people who laughed at their own jokes. It just took them a while to find the internet.
