Ancient Ostia
Leaving Italy at 7AM in late October means I have to be at Fiumicino by 4 AM (!), which probably wont even be light at that time of year. I was going to stay near the Statione Termini in Rome my last night but notice that there dont seem to be any trains for the Airport till after 6 AM, although I think there may be some buses. Was thinking of staying in Ostia instead and taking in the archaeological site the day before I leave instead of going back to Rome after Amalfi Coast. Any thoughts about that? How do they compare with Pompeii and Paestum? Or is farewell to Rome worth the aggravation.

I've been to Ostica Antica about two years ago. It was not difficult to catch the metro from termini to the site. Ostia is an interesting place to look around and will give you some idea of what Roman life was all about. There was no guide so it would be good if you would read about the site before you go.

I have not been to Pompeii or other sites but I think Ostia is famous for its architectural buildings. They do have a well preserved amphitheatre.

I can't compare Ostia Antica to Pompeii and Paestum as I haven't been to either, but I can give you an unqualified recommendation to go there. We thought it was absolutely incredible, and we've seen our share of Roman city ruins. I have a trip report file on it if you're interested - e-mail me.
