I don't recall seeing your travel dates. Is this from more than a couple of years ago? I thought that the new rules regarding visits to coffeehouses by non-Dutch were in place at least 2 years ago. Got totally excited when I read your travelogue thinking maybe they'd reversed the law.
Do you happen to know if these club members who are citizens are allowed to bring guests?

Cheers PalenQ.
Thank you all for taking the time to reply and I'm glad you all enjoyed the read!
Pat_in_Chicago - this trip was six months ago. The tightening of the regulations was being introduced on a city by city basis and was already implemented in some cities nearer the border to Germany where drug "tourists" were coming over in large vans and stocking up. Not too sure what the situation is today in Amsterdam.

Too bad the fun times in Cannabis Cafes (a k a Coffeeshops) is about to have its plug pulled - supposedly after this Jan 1, 2013 only Dutch residents will be able to go into coffeeshops and buy cannabis - and then they have to be members - paying $100 or more just to be a member of a certain coffeeshops - thus I guess no coffeeshop hopping, etc. even for Dutch?
Well even hard to believe that Amsterdam will pull the plug on what must be a tourist dollars plus but the right-Center Dutch government is bent of taking the high out of foreingers in Amsterdamned.
