'Twer me, I would begin by looking for cheap flights on inter European discount airlines. I would probably check routes between Amsterdam and Genoa, and Amsterdam and Pisa. From either of those cities, trains to the CT are fairly frequent, usually via La Spezia.

Alternately, I guess I would look into trains between Amsterdam and the CT.

If you do a search here, you will come across more websites for cheap European flights than you could probably use. There is also good advice for searching train schedules.

And my reply will keep you near the top... maybe someone who has made this trip can tell us how they did it.

thanks tuscanlifeedit, I had tried a specific search but your advice re searching for more general inter flight advice is a good one.

I'll see if I receive any train advice and/or specifics from someone who has done it.

I like searching on opodo.co.uk, but they can be hard to purchase from if you don't live in the UK. Also like kayak.com and have looked at mobissimo.com

I saw a thread going here with over 70 search engines for flights!

Thanks again. We could consider taking a train and stopping somewhere in between--but not sure where.
