Could you be more specific? We took the train. Try the Deutsch Bahn web site for times, etc.
I'll try again. I'll be in Amsterdam with Mom in May. I was thinking of a day trip to Bruges (BRUGGE?) Is it doable? Any recommendations for eats, sights, gifts Etc?? Thanks!

It's easily doable. I've done Amsterdam as a daytrip from Brussels, which is close to the opposite of what you want to do.

Hiyoooo,
Takes about 3+ hours on the train, changing at Antwerp, or longer via Brussels. About the same driving, longer if the awesome drawbridge over the Rhine (I guess) at Rotterdam is open - one of the engineering wonders of the world IMO. Gigundous underground parking garage at the edge of the old town.

To buy? Well, chocolate of course. Also if you or relatives are Tintin fans (the Herge cartoon books), there's a fab Tintin shop near the main Square in Brugge. My spouse nearly made me cash in the plane tickets.

THERE you are! lol
I took the train from Amsterdam to Ghent, spent one night, then took train on to Brugge for one night. It IS possible to go from Amsterdam to Brugge, but personally, I prefered Ghent, and then Brugge, which is nice, is just a short distance away...
Ghent has a castle in the middle of town which is really neat and lots of nice canals, etc. While Brugge is nice, seemed like there was more to do in Ghent.
Gift-wise, there are some very nice lace pieces to be bought... and of course, belgian chocolates...

PS...a neat restaurant in Ghent is The Ghost, right downtown on the canal...cool cellar restaurant...

Thanks for the info, I never thought of Ghent. Belgian chocolates yum! We will be there for seven days so Ghent and Brugge are definitely going to be included.
