Amsterdam hotel suggestions

I will be in Amsterdam towards end of May. I'm looking for a hotel near the center for about $100/night (single room). I'm debating using Priceline - any comments? Any other hotel recommendations welcome.

We just booked the Ramada Inn and Suites for $109/night double room. I'd check first on hotels.com or hoteldiscount.com. That will give you an idea of the going rates for that time of year. Complicated as it sounds, I'd then take a look at the hotel's web sites (those you're interested in) and if they have single room rates, great. If they are a little high....call them or email them directly and ask for any specials. Sometimes contacting them personally will get you a better room rate. You could also check out a Rick Steve's book since he tends to recommend nice, clean, reasonable hotels or look at the Fodor's site for Amsterdam.

I heard that the Owl Hotel is in a very good location and it's a good place to stay. http://www.owl-hotel.nl/

I stayed in Hotel Winston a few months, which is ok. I'm not dying to stay there again. They've a website.

They're pretty cheap.

I read nice reviews of Hotel Washington (?), but I think it's in the museum area and it's not necessarily the most convenient.

111op- do you have a website for Hotel Washington? It's ranked very high on tripadvisor, but I can't google its website.

francophile - thanks for your suggestion. The Owl is asking for 98 euros for a single room, a bit more than what I want to pay.

Yes, I remember looking at TripAdvisor for the ratings. It's also on Fodors, maybe?

Have you been to Amsterdam before? I ask because you are looking 'near the center'. I much prefered the areas out around the canals, Leidseplein, Vondelpark, or the Jordaan. These are still very convenient to touring, but much more picturesque than around the train station, the Dam, RLD, etc. in central.

Hi suze-

Yes, I've been to Amsterdam before, but over 10 years ago. I can't even remember where I stayed - probably some youth hostel.

Anyway, Hotel Washington seems pretty good - close to the museums and Concertgebouw (I'm hoping to catch a concert there). I just faxed my reservation request.

But keep your suggestions coming, in case Hotel Washington is full.

I got a confirmation from Hotel Washington for my reservation. It is 80 euros/night (single room).

Thanks everyone for your suggestions!

By the way, I think that you should stay at the Winston. Maybe you can get the room I stayed in with the torture pictures.

Yes, it's an ensuite room. The shared bath ones are 65 euros.

No thanks on Winston - I'm not as adventurous as you are.

We got a room at the Marriot for $95 per night using Priceline. Seems to be centrally located. If you haven't already I would suggest visiting biddingfortravel.com before bidding on Priceline.

We love the Hotel Washington. I hope you enjoy it as much! They are very nice hosts and it is very close to tram lines to everywhere!
