Amsterdam: Hotel de L'Europe

Amsterdam: Hotel de L'Europe
My time in Amsterdam has shrunk from five to three nights so I was thinking about a hotel splurge. I love old world luxury so immediately checked the Amstel, Grand and Hotel de L'Europe. The Amstel at €500,00 a night got ruled out pretty fast. That said the Hotel de L'Europe is having a 3 for 2 special. I can book a deluxe double room less than € 900,00 for the entire stay. Is this a no brainer or should I also consider the Grand. Thanks!!!

Hope you don't mind but I'm topping my own post. Also, in addition to the Hotel de L'Europe, I was wondering if anyone is familiar with Fusion Suites. It is very highly rated--almost too goot to be true--on TripAdvisor.

Of the three, I would also choose the de L'Europe. It has a much better location that the Amstel, and is far nicer than the Krasnapolsky. Personally, I don't understand the attraction of the Amstel -- while I'm sure the rooms are nice, the location, at least to me, is not that appealing (its on a large canal, not one of the charming inner ring canals).

You must be talking about the Sofitel Grand. IMO the Grand and the L'Europe have the best locations, the Grand has nicer rooms and bedding but Freddy's Bar at L'Europe is my favorite in town by a long shot. Either way, get a canal view room.

Go to L'Europe; its a great hotel in a great location.
I don't like the location of the Amstel either, like others here.
The Krasnapolski has some awful rooms (never go for a cheap room at Krasnapolski), but the breakfast in the winter gardens is excellent.
The Grand is good too, if you like old world luxury, but for the rate you got, I wouldn't hesitate about L'Europe.

Like the poster above, I stayed at the Doelen down the block and can attest to the location being very good. Loved the Cafe de Jaren which is at an address in between the two hotels. An acquaintance of mine has stayed at the L'Europe several times and has opined that it's one of those places where you should get the best room you can afford. I think he stayed in a single or a non-luxury double one time and it was dumpy.

We stayed across the street fromthe Hotel de L'Europe, at a much simpler hotel, but we thought the l'Europe looked great for a splurge. As one already said, the cafe Jarden (sp?) is a few doors down and it has great food and seating on the canal. Another little cafe, the Katoen (sp?) is directly across from the l'Europe and has simpler bagel meals, etc. It's a great location and looked like a very nice, active hotel.

I'm leaning toward the Hotel de L'Europe. It was always my first choice but five nights would have been too much. The 3 for 2 made it very doable. My only concern was that it had a number of negative reviews on TripAdvisor. By the way, I booked a Deluxe Double -- one step below Jr. Suite.

L'Europe can be dumpy if you don't spend, even my junior suite was so so, but the Sofitel Grand has many of the same characteristics, but SERIOUSLY much better bedding. That said, I have stayed at L'Europe once and the Grand a dozen. I would highly recommend the restaurants and the bar at L'Europe, whicgh is csalled Freddy's after Ferddie Heineken, the former owner, look for Gert, Marcel, or Rick behind the bar, true professionals, tell them Richardson sent you, a MUST DO, also, it is expensive, but breakfast on the Amstel at Le Europe is elegant yet casual. Either are very nice hotels.

Richardsonsnm: What are the different room categories like at The Sofitel Grand? Can you get away with a Superior Room or do you need to book Deluxe or Jr. Suite. I'm starting to hear some mixed reviews about the Hotel de L'Europe so am checking out other options including The Grand and The College Hotel. I sure mention that proximity to the Concertgebouw is important to me. Thanks!
