Amsterdam Hotel

I stayed at the Marriott Amsterdam last July. I stayed there because I had enough points for a few free nights. I would not stay there again. The rooms were dirty. The bedspreads were filthy. I called for room service twice and no one answered the phone. It was not to the standards I was use to in the US.

Our trip has changed from April to May. Criteria for hotel? Location is important -- walking distance to main attractions and in a safe area. Not so concerned about charm since it's free and I heard both Marriotts there are business travel-style. But since we're only there to sleep and shower, I'm not as concerned about atmosphere. Cleanliness of course is important. The Renaissance is the most expensive of the two, so that would lead me to believe it's the better hotel. But I read somewhere that the location is more remote which concerns me.

I stayed at a hotel around the corner from the Marriott, and loved its location. The Renaissance is by the train station and Dam Square (under construction, others say here), and in the most crowded part of city IMO. The Marriott is close to Leidseplein, three major museums, the Vondelpark, canal cruise dock, etc. Perhaps others have had better experiences at the Marriott than Gayle...?
