We loved de Luwte at Leliegracht 26-28 in Amsterdam. We had a three- course meal that was delicious; the atmosphere was lovely and the service great. It cost $105 (USD)for two of us, including wine. It was recommended to us by the owner of the Tulip Museum who said a lot of locals go there for a special night out. Everyone speaks English.

Aside from going to Indonesia, Amsterdam is the best place to eat Indonesian food. Just don't go for the Rijstafel - that multi-course feast that will overwhelm you. Hard to go wrong otherwise - we dipped into many such places and never were disappointed, and I had been to Indonesia and knew what it should taste like.
The colonial past of Holland also accounts for other ethnic ties - so try and enjoy the unusual.

We liked Sluizer's a few years back...especially for their generous and nicely prepared fish dishes. My journal says dinners were around 20+€...for Indonesian, on an earlier visit we found Sukasari (on Damstraat) to be excellent..both near city center.

Suggest The Seven Bridges for unique lodging, on Regulier Canal.
