Day trips all by train include Zanse Sanchs (a quaint village), the outdoor museum in Arnhem, Alkmaar market (Friday only I think). You may be able to do Brussels easily by train too.
I did a bus tour to Volendam/Marken- it was touristy but nice.

Ellen

Haarlem is a nice little town to visit for a day. It's only 15 minutes or so by train from Amsterdam.

Some day trips that I would suggest are:
1. National Park De Hoge Veluwe and the Kroller Muller Museum (see www.kmm.nl)
2. The City of Den Haag (The Hague) where you can visit the Panorama Mesdag (huge circular painting), Mauritshuis Museum, Vredespaleis (Peace palace), Madurodam (Netherlands in miniature) and Scheveningen beach
3. The island of Terschelling (long day trip, best if you have a car)
4. Enkhuizen (open air museum) and Hoorn, two nice small towns about an hour from Amsterdam.
5. The towns of Leiden, Delft, Utrecht, Haarlem, Rotterdam, Alkmaar are all (less than) an hour from Amsterdam by train and have lots of things to see/do. (see www.visitholland.com for descriptions of the towns)
6. If you like biking, rent a bicyle for a day and explore the countryside around Amsterdam, for instance the road from Abcoude (just 5 miles South of Amsterdam) to Driemond along the river Gein.
Have a nice time!
(Ellen's suggestion "Zanse Sanchs" should be spelled "Zaanse Schans" and is a rather touristy open air museum just North of Amsterdam. Many people seem to like it.)

We traveled to the region earlier this year. We enjoyed walking and lunch on the square in Delft. Haarlem has bustling pedestrian mall and square. We enjoyed the Teylers museum in Haarlem, which is small but ecclectic. We also took a 7 minute train ride to the coast from Haarlem. Being from the midwest, it is always a treat for us to see an ocean.
We got a day pass on the train and did a circular route around the country. We got off where we pleased and back on when we were ready to leave. The trains are a pleasure to ride and are very efficient. I can't remember what the pass cost but we thought it was reasonable.
