Amalfi or Florence
Meeting our daughter who is studying in Spain in Italy in October. We only have four days in Italy and it will be our first time there. We will be taking our 14 year old son along and this will be his first trip to Europe. Question...Florence or Amalfi Coast? We will spend 6 days in Barcelona after the Italy trip and I really do not want to spend the entire vacation only seeing large cities, so Rome is out for this trip. Which one would have the best weather in mid October and which would give us the best feel for Italy? I have to decide if we are to fly into Milan or Rome tomorrow. All tips and advice welcome. Thanks so much in advance.

Well, the weather in October is usually a bit warmer the farther south you go. However, we've had glorious weather in Florence in October.
The best feel for Italy? These are two completely different destinations that are both truly "Italy." You have to decide if it's museums, art and history or scenery and "charm" that you're seeking. Not our call to make.
About the only comment I'll make is that travelling between the Amalfi Coast and Rome will take longer than between Florence and Milan, and with only four days time is precious.

IMHO there is no question....Florence has many things to offer, but the Amalfi coast would be my choice. Just returned from Praiano and Positano...We found it stunningly beautiful...the weather in October will be normally very warm, dry and clear.....however...it is quite undeveloped, as the tertrain is so rugged. That said, you can not possibly regret a trip to this area..and don't miss Ravello...
