Not overly impressed with Big Sur, California. Will I be bored with the Amalfi Coast as well?

Yeah, if you were bored with Big Sur, you'll absolutely HATE Amalfi. Recommend you visit Death Valley instead. Be sure to go in August. <BR>

NO, it is NOT a joke nor a troll! I'm quite serious, I can assure you! If the Amalfi Coast isn't any more spectacular than Big Sur, then I would be wasting my time and money visting said coastline! (Actually, the Bellagio and Four Seasons in Vegas are quite nice. Branson? N E V E R -- NEVER in a million years! ! ! !)

I am sorry but I can't help you. You see, your sense of beauty must be so much more refined and sophisticated than mine since two of my favorite places in the world are the aforementioned coasts. <BR>

Well, actually, I should have prefaced my remark by stating that after having made several trips to gorgeous Hawaii, that by the time I made it to Big Sur, well, it was, shall we say, rather uneventful! I was simply wondering if the Amalfi Coast would surpass Big Sur!

I think a lot of it depends on your expectations which appear to already be very high. You probably shouldn't go as it sounds like you'll be disappointed. I'm just curious, but what places do you really like?

You will never be happy as long as you keep comparing. Each area has its own beauty. If you keep wanting the next place to be greater than the last place you will always be unhappy. For example you can't compare the green fields of England with the green fields of Switzerland because each has a special beauty of its own.

I'll take your question seriously. I know both areas exceptionally well. While Big Sur has incredible beauty (I'd give parts of it a 99 out of a hundred) the Amalfi coast is unsurpassingly beautiful--a 100 out of a 100. Plus, it's in Italy--sun, food, art, history and exceptional villages etc. Your expectations WILL be met, as long as you're not looking for a lot of museums. It has just about everything else.

i personally have never been to the amalfi coast, however,it's on our next agenda to italy. i have been to italy several times, and yes, i've been to big sur. it's night and day. it's a different country with different cultures. i prefer the italian, not that i'm not some sort of patriot. i just love italy and i would love to be making your decision right now. i suggest if you want a real turn of events, try the coast of turkey. it's a little further, but what the hay?

What amazes me how people sit around and just blast others for their feelings and opinions. Surely it is the insecurities of those blasting the other persons opinions. I too was not overly impressed with Big Sur. I did think it was beautiful and enjoyed it but I already went along the Oregon coastline and compared the two. Oregon was much more laidback and less crowded. As I am planning a trip to the Amalfi Coast I know there will be no comparison!! To blend the scenery and culture and various day trips will add the extra touch. The difference between Big Sur and the Amalfi Coast will be the towns clinging to the cliffside! So I understand the question and it is too bad others must be so rude - I see it on ANY message where somebody can not handle the fact that others may not have enjoyed what they have.

Going back to Positano for the third time in 6 years. The Amalfi area is the most beautiful and charming place I have ever been. Love the scenery, LOVE the people!

Hi,<BR><BR>Wonderful photos and one of my favorate places in the world, I don't know much about Big Sur, but as these the pictures from Jim Tardio show, and I agree with Capo, the reason Europe is so special, besides the spectacular scenery, you also have many centuries of human culture, i.e. food, wine, archetecture, and pure history. The Amalfi coast is breathtakingly beautiful. Sorrento is fun, Positano fantastic and sophisticated. Capri magical. Its worth going simply to save money: If you do not like it, you probably will find very few places outside the US that you could enjoy. Therefore you can stay home and save all that travel money!
