I've never done this, and normally wouldn't because food/wine/champagne is a huge part of my "budget" and thus I stay in moderately priced hotels.
That said when I graduate with my MS in two years I'm planning on a trip to Paris (of course), starting out at a typical 3* and ending with two nights at the George V. It is a dream of mine that WILL come true!
I say, do whatever works for you and makes you happy, and who cares what other people think.

Actually your method makes a lot of sense: you are attempting to spend the bulk of your budget where it matters to you.
This really isn't so different from what most of us have to do year-round, in order to be able to afford to travel: we squeak an extra year out of the car, say, or avoid eating out the rest of the year, etc. etc., in order to be able to afford that trip.
Whatever, it seems to be working for you. So, what's the Ritz like?

Sue, you're right I spend the bulk of my budget where it matters to me.
Neo, I'm not miserable staying in the other hotels, in fact I like the Thistle hotels. For the location alone I think they're great, but as I said before, the first 3 days I'm never in the room so anything more expensive would be wasted. Like you my husband also asks why I don't stay in a £150 room for all the 4 nights but in most cities upping the budget by $70 dollars doesn't really make much difference on what you get, whereas the luxury hotels are something else.

You asked me what the Ritz is like, well like all old traditional luxury hotels it's very special, the thing I like best about it is the ambience, I've read reviews where people have said it's too snobbish & too rigid, as they don't allow jeans & men have to wear a jacket but that's exactly what makes it so special. I like to sit in the lobby & people watch. Last year it didn't hurt to have to sit at the Rivoli bar next to Mick Jagger either.
I've also stayed at the Savoy, the first nights I was across the road at the Strand Palace & probably the doorman saw me leaving the Strand because when I got to the door he said "I'm sure you'll be much happier staying with us madame" LOL & Claridges, but my favourite in London is The Ritz.
My other luxury shopping hotels have been The Waldorf Astoria in New York, (My first choice was the Plaza but it was the week of the Zeta-Jones/Douglas wedding & they were'nt accepting reservations)The George V in Paris, I loved it but next time will try the Ritz just to see what it's like in comparison.The Hassler Villa Medici in Rome & the Burj Al Arab in Dubai, which I didn't like at all.

I wouldn't do this either but I can certainly follow and appreciate your reasoning and am happy to hear that it works so well for you! 
Firstly, I don't do shopping trips so the nearest thing would be a city break in which case I'd spend about the same amount of time in the room on any given day. As I don't have the stamina of many Fodorite travellers (judging by how much some report seeing in one day) I do spend time in the hotel - I often stop back during the afternoon for a rest before going back out late afternoon again.
So for me it makes sense to find something as nice as possible for the whole trip. And I don't like moving hotels either unless I'm in a new destination.

Imitation, sorry, it was the Burj I didn't like. I also really liked the Hassler, beautiful hotel, the rooftop restaurant is spectacular & the position is breathtaking. I teamed it up with the Hotel Contilia which I got through priceline for $75 per night.
