AM-FM Radio Reception?

Hello, I will be in the Netherlands for two weeks in December. I'd like to listen to some music, news in English would be a bonus, on the radio while there. Would a U.S. AM/FM radio be serviceable? Thanks, Tom

A portable AM/FM radio should work fine. I'm still using - in the US - a small portable radio I bought while living in Germany years ago.

The BBC World Service is available at 648khz which is received well in Amsterdam especially if you can get away from noise sources: televisions, power lines and flourescent lights. European AM stations are spaced at 9 Khz intervals so some digitally tuned International style radios have a switch for 9 or 10 khz tuning. There's lots of Dutch music stations on the FM.

We weren't in the Netherlands -- but I'll never forget waking up in our tiny hotel on the coast of Wales, turning on the bedside radio and, as I scanned the channels, hearing Welsh, Gaelic, and French - as well as English. One of my favorite travel moments!

You might be able to receive some AM transmissions from the UK. Try BBC Radio Five Live on 909 or 693 on AM to get it. Also, if your radio stretches to Long Wave frequencies, Radio 4 on 198 might also be receiveable - I've picked this up in Spain before.

As a side point, you might also be able to pick up US Forces radio from Germany - I've done so in Scotland!

Larry is right - if your radio has auto tuning it will only hit certain spots.
It should just have a old style dial so you can tune anywhere or be switchable between 9 & 10 Khz steps.
