allocating two weeks between Portugal and Spain

We are in the beginning phases of planning a two week vacation for next June. We want to spend at least a week in Portugal, but are then trying to decide between spending the entire time in Portugal, or perhaps wandering over into Western Spain a bit, or else to spend the entire second week in Spain (finishing up in Barcelona I'm thinking). If it were you and it was your first visit to the Iberian Peninsula how would you divide up your time?

What are you more interested in with only two weeks to spare? Spain or Portugal? It's a long way from Porto or Lisbon to Barcelona. The entire Iberian Peninsula lies in between. Remember, two weeks isn't as long as it seems.

You might consider Portugal and northwestern Spain..Lots to experience..food. wine, architecture, history, beaches. Can't do it all in 2 weeks. Will you be driving? First visit(17 days) was Porto,Duoro Valley, north to Braga, South to Algarve through the middle, north to Lisbon and home. We had a car and stayed at wonderful pousadas (special drive/stay package) Second visit (post cruise, 9 days)..Lisbon, north to Obidos, Coimbra, Navarre, back toward Lisbon, south along the Atlantic coast to Porto Cova back to Lisbon again with a car and home. But as I said "can't do it all". Whatever path you take you will love the place!!!

Hi, yes, we will be driving. we just locked in on a Lisbon/Lisbon arrival/departure so what I'm thinking sounds a lot like what you describe - go up the coast from Lisbon and then maybe venture into NW Spain a bit, down, through Western Spain, ending up for a few days on the Algarve before returning to Lisbon (maybe the last day in Sintra?). does this sound reasonable. we will have exactly 14 nights. suggestions on how best to allocate. I don't want to switch hotels too often - maybe choose a few places as bases to venture out from. your thoughts are so appreciated

Sintra is a good day-trip from Lisbon, where you will find a lot more going on once the sun sets.

Check your milage if planning on going to the Algarve on this trip. You're be covering a lot of ground in only two weeks, around 2000 km, more or less, which doesn't allow for much time to explore and enjoy the different areas.

We're planning on spending 12 days just visiting the Leon-Monforte de Lemos-Bragança-Valladolid areas in late October, which will amount to nearly 1000 km behind the wheel.
