We just returned from a week in Spain and spent several nights in Alicante since our son is studying there this semester. We stayed at the Abba Eurohotel which is just down the street from the bus station and not far from the train station. Not sure what you consider cheap but it was about 70 euros for a nice room. Be sure to climb to the top of the castillo for a great view of the city.

Hi,
ttt = taking this to the top - i think
With regards to accommodation
I have stayed at Hostal Cataluna in Alicante about 3 times in the past 12 months.
Sometimes a little spanish is required at reception but there was a n English speaking receptionist on last time I visited in February.
This a basic hostel for 21 Euros for a single room with TV with ensuite shower and toilet with 24hour security.
Takes visa / mastercard.
It is about ten minuted from bus station.
Address
Gerona 11
Telefono 965 207 366
Telf.y.fax 965 143 357
Hope this helps
