Alghero Sardinia
We are shortly going to be spending a week in Alghero, staying at the Hotel San Francesco. Can anyone offer info on what this hotel is like, the weather this time of year and things to do and see in Alghero. Thanks.

You'll see photos of this hotel at www.sanfrancescohotel.com
Here are my observations (I did not stay there, but I did visit the public areas and was shown one twin room):
1. It's the ONLY hotel in Old Town Alghero.
2. It's location is the finest in town for people interested in staying in the historic area.
3. It's main entrance is on an alleyway, adjacent to the Church of San Francesco (which itself is worth a visit).
4. It's a modest two-star property, but all rooms have private facilities and air conditioning was added last year. There are no TVs or minibars in the rooms.
5. Rooms are spartan and smallish but very clean, in line with the monastic environment.
6. Breakfast (included in room price) is served on the upper portico, overlooking the charming inner courtyard.
7. Weather this time of year in Alghero is usually very warm and humid. There can be occasional rainshowers.
8. You'll need a full day in Alghero, and about three days to explore the hinterland and surroundings. Don't miss the following: Neptune Grotto at Capo Caccia, Porto Conte area, Le Bombarde beach (Hotel Dei Pini), Bosa and Bosa Marina.
9. Alghero has pretty good and very inexpensive public transportation to the surrounding areas of tourist interest. You won't need public transportation (or a car) to visit the city itself.
10. You don't need to rent a car for a one week vacation (although having a car available is very useful to reach the more remote areas).

Paula - I once lived on the Southern coast of Sardinia and was through Alghero a few times but never overnighted there.
GAC's description is spot on with what I recall about the town, sights, climate, etc. I could add that one way or another, you can easily day trip to sites along the Emerald Coast. IMO, worth a look.
Have a great trip.
