Aix or Nice? And where to rent?

I am going to France in September and I can't decide between Aix-en-Provence or Nice. Any suggestions? Also, has anyone had any experience with owners direct or homestay (or similar)? I'd like to rent a centrally located apartment / townhouse (and don't want to hire a car). Thanks

Aix is such a lovely city, it seems to be not quite as frantic as Nice gets. If you want some beach culture though, Nice is it.

Without a car, there are more things to do in & around Nice than Aix. Aix is smaller than you may think - at least the interesting section.

Note that there are zero no-train-change trains from the center of Aix to the center of Avignon (for example). Lots of trains from Nice to other spots along the Cote.

I totally agree with StuDudley. You might feel trapped without a car in Aix. Not a problem in Nice, where there is excellent train and bus service to most of the destinations you'll want to visit up and down the coast. Also, Nice in itself is an amazing, vibrant city, with a fabulous old town to explore, great museums, pebbly beach, and wonderful people-watching along the Blvd. des Anglais. Have fun!

Another vote for Nice. Aix is a lovely city and worth a visit but I wouldn't choose it for an extended stay.
Staying in Nice gives you great transportation options.
Plus in the city itself you'll find a mulitude of things to do.
