Airport security – new restrictions from 22 September
Hooray
Heathrow etc. back to 22" carryon and lipstick but still no lotions flying out of Heathrow to the USA.
http://tinyurl.com/raalf
Once through security: All shops and catering outlets are open to all passengers. If you are travelling to any destination except the USA then you can take all items purchased in the departures lounge into the aircraft cabin.
If you are travelling to the USA: Extra restrictions are in place. Passengers will be subjected to secondary security searches at the gate. No liquids purchased in the departure lounge will be allowed into the aircraft cabin and any drinks or liquid items must be consumed before boarding. Food, however, is allowed. Passengers boarding flights to the USA and items they are carrying, including those acquired after the central screening point, will be subjected to secondary search at the gate and any liquids discovered will be removed.

Clearly, this indicates that the British authorities are convinced that would-be criminals are effectively thwarted from smuggling explosive liquids into airport shops to get them onto planes...
...and that they are kowtowing to the inane policies of TSA.
The TSA, its employees and policies are terrorizing all American flyers.
And no one else is (or at least not as effectively)... as far as I can tell.
Best wishes,
Rex

"Why can't people bring liquids bought in the departure lounge onto flights to the USA...is it simply more American paranoia?"
Of course not.. Harry Potter is mad at the US and magically transforms those liquids to dangerous substances as they cross the border... (Good a guess as any? Considering that terrorists have targeted other countries you do wonder why this threat is ONLY targeted at us?)

Just think of the paranoia that has gripped the USA since the unfortunate events of 11 September...
1. The USA is the only country that feels it necessary to fingerprint and photograph visitors to the country even from supposed friendly countries such as Britain.
2. In this era of trying to relax national borders, the USA is instituting a passport check at the US-Canadian border, supposedly the world's longest undefended border.
3. Now this with liquids, even if bought in a sterile atmosphere on all US flights.
What's next? Retinal scans....
It's really hard to explain to people who tell me they wouldn't want to visit the USA with such paranoia so rampant. This is a travel board and we're all supposed to be making travel much easier for everybody.
I just don't get it.

Please list all the countries of the world that have had an attack of even a fraction of the magnitude of September 11, 2001.
Name all the countries which are being faced with the nearly daily threats of "we will wipe you off the face of the earth".

Are we really allowed ro take lipstick through security?
Has anyone done this in the last few days?
I'm off to NZ via Tokyo this week and am really confused about the whole issue. The baa website says you can take lipstick on board but it doesnt say you can or cannot take it through security!

I guess I'm the odd man out here. I don't get why people complain about the very security that's intended to keep them safe. Purchases in departure lounges: I presume they fear there could be abettors among the thousands working in the stores---a not illogical suspicion in my mind, given that many recently thwarted attacks involved British borns.
Why does anyone on these boards presume that he/she knows---or should know--- everything there is to know about the threat? Rather, I presume they know things that led them to design these precautions. Are they perfect? Of course not. No human endeavor is. But I empathize with those charged with keeping us safe while making every effort to minimize disruption to travel and the economy. As for extra documentation of foreign visitors, why not? Just saying other countries are more lax doesn't mean they're right. What does it hurt? Might the authorities err on the side of precaution? Yes. I prefer that to their being too lax.
All quickly-designed programs are subject to change once they're practiced on the ground. There will inevitably be more changes like the ones described above. Some will be more lax, some may be more discomforting.
Given what some are sacrificing for me, I think I can go a few hours without moisturizer.

Spain and the UK to name 2. Neither has felt compelled to set up the draconian impediments to tourism the US has.....
Let me ask you a question...do you think any of this nonsense going on would have stopped the vermin who perpetrated the 11/09 atrocity????
There is a fine line between doing things to "secure" the borders and live up to our national anthem, the land of the free and the home of the brave.
What we can argue about, in an honest non name calling manner, is just whether or not these measures do any good and are necessary. No other country, at present, is not allowing you to buy a bottle of water in the departure lounge and take it aboard for a 9 hour flight...are these countries less appreciative of the "threat" than the US TSA?

<< I'd happily submit to a retinal scan/registration if I could go back to carrying all my liquids, gels, and creams. >>
<< Oh, no. Tell me you didn't say that. Please? >>
I add my name to the list of those who wants registration. Retinal scan is just one way to verify that I (the traveler) am really me (the registrant).
The focus needs desperately to shift on the _person_ who might try to carry out a terrorist event, not the _item(s)_ carride by travelers for normal life.
There is no way to know what deterrence occurs by any TSA procedure, but it has not _intercepted_ any _person_ planning _anything_ nefarious. Indeed, from the very day this liquids "carnival" was begun, there is the irony that a would-be terrorist waiting in line with liquid explosives only had to drop the bottle into the garbage bin with all the other shampoos and lotions. Never to be identified. Never to be connected with his contraband. Ready to live and fly another day. His will to commit suicide was his chief weapon, not any bottle of "stuff" he was carrying that day.

While not as many people died the goal was certainly the same in the UK last July... Only an "ugly American" assumes that we are the only targets and that since our attack was bigger we are the only targets.
Posts like this shame me as they appear to indicate that no one else's losses count. To those injured or the family members of those killed ANY terrorist attack is HUGE.

Well some good news...
According to CNN, the US TSA will be announcing that the idiotic restroction on bringing liquids onto planes bought in the departure lounges of airports will be lifted.
A small degree of sanity restored!

Yes, a small step forward, though it is discouraging that further easing is not foreseeable.

No, and I've said this before, the rules won't be further relaxed-the British plot to bomb aircraft has by no means been resolved-the threat is still very nuch present- it's a question of intelligence work and analysis at this point.
