Yes, you will go through security again at LHR if you're connecting. The difference is that it's "airside" security for connecting passengers only (i.e. not with all the people who are starting their journey in the UK). Even if you're transferring within the same terminal (e.g. T4-T4), you still go through security again. You do not, however, have to go through Immigration & Customs.
By the way, I do this about once a month. Estimate for how long it will take: For a transfer with no terminal change, best case scenario (flight disembarks on time, your gate is close to the transfer centre, line-ups not too long) = 20 minutes from the time the plane pulls up to the gate. Typical same-terminal transfer = 30 minutes (because often there's a delay disembarking, or you're a 10 minute walk from the transfer centre, or there's a 15-20 minute line-up for security). Worst case scenario for a same-terminal transfer: about an hour. For a transfer between terminals: add 15-30 minutes (best to worst case).
There is a Fasttrack queue for people connecting onto a flight for which they hold business or first class tickets (it's not good enough to have elite frequent traveller status with an airline), at least at T4, but it's only open until early afternoon.

"If you are old enough to have certain metal fillings in your teeth, make sure you get those removed before you travel"
DANG! I knew I forgot something and I leave tomorrow morning. Guess they will have to strip search my mouth. (I have gold, metal etc you name it!)

alanRow: Oops, I should have clarified. You are right that if a passenger is connecting at Heathrow from an international flight onto a domestic flight (e.g. continuing from London to Edinburgh), then the passenger goes through customs/immigration. But if you are connecting from one international flight to another, you don't go through the normal immigrations/customs clearance, although you may be stopped and asked to show your passport.
