Airline cancellation/postponement w/o penalty

Hi,
We're in the process of cancelling/postponing our trip to Greece this coming Saturday. It's likely that we will lose $1300 on the tickets since the airline (Virgin Atlantic) stated that tickets are no-refunable and non-changeable once they were issued. I'm wondering if anyone has been able to cancel or postpone the air travle without paying penality. If so, please share how this was done.
Any comments would be appreciated. Thanks.
Most airlines are very sympathetic to recent events and have been issuing full refunds or rebooking without penalty. I've received a full refund from Virgin Express which is a sub company of Virgin Atlantic. There is only one company, Buzz (connected with KLM) that refuses to refund my money.

If you're in the states, check the website for your airlines. I know many airlines are giving time for travelers to reschedule if their flights were cancelled due to the attack or completely refunding the price of tickets. Good luck.

I called today out of curiosity to find out if I could get my money back for 3 round trip Aer Lingus tickets.I purchased these thru Sceptre Tours and they said $200 penalty per ticket.I'm not scheduled to leave until Oct 20. A reschdule would be $150 per ticket.I also have non-refundable non-changeable tickets.

I would contact the airline directly sooner rather than later as here in the Uk the standard cancellation charges are beginning to come back into effect now that the transatlantic flights are returning to normal.

Thanks for the information. I have just contacted Virgin Atlantic and was asked to call back tomorrow since they're reviewing re-booking options. But it does sound like they'll allow re-booking without penalty. I'm sure many airlines realized that not allowing re-booking/refund will have long-term negative effect on the airline business.

I would like to point out that Northwest Airlines IS offering full refunds for flights cancelled September 11-13. I checked their website, talked with a rep on phone and have sent my paper tickets (Seattle-London Gatwick, depart Spetmeber 13th) into the refund office in St. Paul, MN. British Airways also is refunding my Sept 14 flight, London Gatwick-Amsterdam.

Air France is offering full refunds to anyone who booked a ticket before 9/11 for travel after 9/25, or you can choose to rebook with no penalty but must travel by January 2002. We're scheduled to go to Paris in November, we're taking a wait and see attitude for now.

US Air has been generous in allowing full refunds, even on my non-refundable tickets to Paris. They will refund for travel 9/11 - 9/25. They also re-instated the frequent flyer miles I had used to upgrade to first class (sob!) without any re-deposit fees. Thanks USAir, hope their stock price rebounds.

Sorry for the misinformation: NWA is offering full refunds for flights booked for the dates of September 11 - September 15, not through only September 13. See http://www.nwa.com/features/weather.shtml
I just cancelled a domestic business trip with United Airlines that was scheduled for tomorrow. I had the choice of a full refund or reschedule. The woman I spoke with was very nice and understanding.

This is such a devastating time for the airlines. I can't even imagine the lost revenue, not to mention that they, too, suffered a huge loss of life among their crew.

I brought our tickets back to the Alitalia office this morning and will receive a full refund on our September 21-October 1 cancelled trip to Italy. I should add that they could NOT have been more pleasant about it.

If the airline or tour companies offer you a choice of a refund or a credit, consider this. Some of the airlines are openly discussing bankruptcy, and the entire industry has been hit hard by this. If they declare bankruptcy under US law, you may not have your credit honored.

Also, everyone, remember to pay for future airline tickets and tours with a credit card in case any of the airlines/tour companies file for bankruptcy. Then you would have a hope of stopping payment and getting your money back.

Air France is refunding my London-Paris roundtrip ticket that was scheduled to depart on 9/15, and the ticket was sold as non-refundable. I think most airlines are being pretty reasonable about refunds. I've heard that tickets for flights through 9/25 will be refundable on several U.S.-based carriers.

Air France offered me a choice of a full refund on a non-cancellable consolidator ticket, or to re-schedule the ticket. I was supposed to go BOS-CDG-FCO on 9/14. They have worked with me to re-route my outbound flight for this Saturday through JFK instead. Great service!! I'll be flying with these folks again!

I'm hoping that Virgin Atlantic will give us a refund since we don't know when we'll be flying again.
