Air from east coast US to island of Karpathos Greece

Hi, Does anyone have any reccomendations for travel between the New York area to Karpathos, with as few layovers as possible? Travel would be in mid July of this year.
Other than thru Athens, do any airlines fly to the island via other major cities in Europe?
I have heard about charters, but do not know how to go about researching them.
Any and all help is appreciated.--K.

If you use this site

http://www.skyscanner.net/

put Karpathos in the 'from' box and then say select for all of August...then look at what options you get in the drop down for the 'To' box.....

there seem to be quite a few from German airports

Thanks alihutch, but I cna't seem to find any flights for July. When I choose the airlines, it comes up that there are no flights available? I will continue to fool around with it.

I found Air Berlin which flies there from 6 different German cities. Other than that, I would try Aegean Airlines or Olympic. Charter airlines can be a bit strange, I've found that a website will say a cheap airline flies somewhere but when you check on their website, there are no flights. Perhaps they only offer the charter as a package holiday.

Karpathos is not that far from Rhodes, maybe you could fly to Rhodes then connect from there, via ferry. To check who flies to Rhodes -

um..not sure what you are doing there....'choosing the airlines'? Select 'From' Karpathos Select 'Date' go to July and then click 'whole month' option. The 'to' dropdown should then give you all the cities that you can fly from...there are 12..

Good luck

Hi Klapenta,

Athens-Karpathos flights are currently operated by Athens Airways. This is a subsidized route that has just been tendered for the period from April 1st. Bids have been submitted by Olympic Air, Aegean Airlines, Athens Airways, and possibly others. you will have to wait and see which airline wins the contract.

It seems to me that attempting to reach Karpathos by air from any other European city would be much more difficult. There are only eight flights per week from Athens, and without checking, my guess would be that flights from any German airport would be no more than one or two per week.
