We spent five days in Turin, three days in Alba and a day in Neive last fall. I thought five days was two too many for Turin.

I wouldn't rule out Tuscany. You could base in Siena (an easy bus connection from Rome) and do day trips to Montalcino (Brunellos), San Gimignano (Vernaccia di San G) and other wine towns (Chianti area).

The Amalfi coast would be a good choice and has much more than Pompeii. The Campania Artecard lists all the museums and archaeology sites (the 3 day Tutta la Regione card includes transport) in the area. You could visit Pasteum or the Royal Palace in Caserta. Scroll down for the list of museums.
