African music in Paris?

My husband and I will be in Paris in mid-May and I was hoping to hear some live music from Africa/Morocco,etc. Is anyone aware of where some clubs might be that would feature this kind of music?

Jenny:
Check out the Institut du Monde Arabe, Paris 5th.
www.imarabe.org

Besides the very interesting building (architect Jean Nouvel) it has great exhibitions, movies and sometimes also concerts.
Get yourself a copy of the weekly what's on "Pariscope" for more details re concerts. I saw Cheb Mami (Algerian rai star) in December at the Bercy Stadium and it was great.
Have fun!
The website http://www.pariscope.fr has the whole text of the best events list for Paris, the city which presents the music of Africa even better than London does. On the home page, you click on "concerts" and "world". The text is French, but easy enough. In the current issue, there are a good number of Moslem and African names: I list about half of them below. A place called La Maroquinerie may be right for you. Then on arrival you buy the magazine Pariscope and the Michelin street atlas, and find a wealth of ideas. Welcome to my multicultural Europe.

Ben Haines, London

Cheikh Boussad
Cohiba
Djama
Ensemble al-Kindi
Ensemble Kasika
Ensemble Chouval Bwa
Ensemble Tartit
Farida Muhammad Ali
Fawzy al-Aiedy
Hasna el-Becharia
Hassan Tabar
Rassoul Babaï
Hossein Omoumi
Karamba Dioubaté

I think the advice to look in Pariscope when you get there is good. I don't know of Moroccan music in a club, I haven't heard anything like that, but there is lots of African music of various kinds in Paris (from Africa and the Caribbean). Here are a few places I know of that have some music like that at least some of the time: Le Clair Obscur, 62 rue de Charonne, 11th arr (salsa, Afrocuban, Antilles), Le Gips, 41 rue St Denis, 4th (Afroantilles), Cezar Cafe near Chatelet metro (lost address), Satellite Cafe, 44 rue de la Folie Mericourt, 11th arr (eg, 1/16 and 1/17 had an Angolan folk singer), and La FOlie en Tete at 33 rue Butte aux Cailles in the 13th has various kinds of world music, laid back ambience. Do you know French? If so, here is a pretty good web site for Parisian spots for live music: www.zingueurs.com When you do a search by date, you can select "recherche d'evenement" (search by event), and then select from the drop-down "musique-concert-world" or concert-reggae. It gives you clubs, performers, dates, addresses, etc. Probably you can make it out even if you don't know French.
