Afraid of Starving in Amsterdam
I'll be spending a week or more in
Amsterdam next month (May 01), and judging
by the articles and posts I've read, it
might not be the best of destinations for
someone on a strict low-cholesterol diet. (I had a heart attack recently and have diabetes.)

Any suggestions?

Gerry K

Hi Gerry, at first it may seem intimidating since so much of the popular food in Amsterdam is fried or heavy. However Amsterdam is an international city and you will be able to find a variety of Chinese, Indian, Thai food as well as your food chains... while McDonalds obviously shouldn't be eaten on low cholesterol diet, they DO have good salad bars! Also there are tons of markets where you can buy fresh produce, breads and all the same types of things you would buy back home. The only difficulty I can forsee is going into a restaurant and specifically ASKING for a low cholesterol meal. You would be better off asking for a salad, or steamed vegetarian dishes, or poached fish... all of which you will find readily available in Amsterdam. Just stay away from french fries smothered in mayo.

Hi Gerry!!!

I found THE most WONDERFUL Thai restaurant in Amsterdam last year. Everything was fresh, the restaurant was VERY clean, the prices were right, and the staff very friendly and accomadating. It is NOT a tourist restaurant, though they do have an English-version menu. VERY healthy, and VERY tasty!!!

SJAALMAN

Prinsegracht 178
Amsterdam

020-6202440

Enjoy!!!
Ross.

Re the previous response. Yes and no. Some Asian foods are cooked in oils high in cholesterol and are heavily salted. Also many Asian cuisines have a lot of hidden sugars.

I was just in A'dam and I think your best bet will be a vegetarian restaurant where they are already concerned about the content of food and could answer questions about the other components. Not to worry .. on the assumption that English is your home language .. almost everyone [particularly the young people] speaks better English than I do! I hope other people can come forward with recommendations.
