Caroline - I'm arriving at Marco Polo on Friday morning. And then will probably be absolute toast and hauled off to Montereale Valcellina. My brother is taking me to the Questura on Monday, as I'll be in too late to make it on Friday.
He says he is taking me to a Christmas party we've been invited to. Nobody speaks English there except him. I'll be taking along my phrasebook and pocket dictionary and mangling Italian as best I can to try and talk with people.
Only three more days until I get on a plane! *faints with excitement*

A book that is really worth reading, the story of a British couple relocating to Venice, a good read. From the introduction, "I decided ... The experience would be worth recording, either as a "how to do it" guide, or as a terrible warning to others".

Thanks, Holly! By this time tomorrow, I should be somewhere between Chicago and Madrid. I can't even tell you how excited I am!
Caroline - I'd love to meet up for that spritz when I've got a little space to breathe. So much to do! So many things to see! Is your husband's choir doing any choral performances after Xmas or is it all seasonal stuff right now with no immediate plans for next year? I'd love to hear see him sing at some point.

I arrived yesterday. Tomorrow my brother and I will probably go up to Poffabro to see all the various nativities (there are 150 or so in this tiny town). Monday, off to deal with official paperwork!

An update for folks who are curious. My Codice Fiscale arrived in the mail today. I have an Italian bank account now and am waiting for the Questura to contact me to say that my Permesso di Soggiorno has arrived in Pordenone - that will probably be in the first week or two of February, considering how bureaucracies tend to work (slowly).
I spoke to a rental agent and her office manager yesterday in Trieste after visiting the town last week, and on Tuesday I will be signing a rental contract for a beautiful apartment with the owner of the building. The apartment is right near the train station and in walking distance of everything, as well as being large, bright, and quiet.
Overall, everything has been going brilliantly well. The only thing I don't have now is my Carta d'Identità, which the office in Montreale Valcellina (where my brother lives) won't give me until I actually have my Permesso in hand. Because I'm here on an elective residence visa (which he had never seen before) and am being sponsored into the country by my brother, nobody is quite sure how to classify me, so they want to wait until the federal government has given me the Permesso just to be sure everything is all right.
I can't officially move into the place in Trieste and change my address to the apartment until I have the ID card, but I can start shuffling stuff into it, and looking for furniture, and I can give the shipping company the delivery address. My boxes left the US on December 31st and are currently somewhere on the ocean on their way to the UK to pass customs into the EU.
I've been traveling to beautiful places, eating fantastic food, and meeting lovely people. Trieste is gorgeous and felt a lot livelier to me than Venice did, though I am definitely planning on spending more time in Venice exploring. The Triestine combination of mountains and water made me feel right at home after leaving the Seattle area.
I can't wait to be in my own space again, and to start my new life here on my own!

That's great news, Erynn! This is such an exciting time!
When I moved here, I was terrified because I had a finite amount of money, and I wasn't sure I could squeeze in everything I needed to buy. So, I didn't let myself enjoy each day and the process and the joy of the move.

oh, also, I've found that shopping on amazon is a great resource. I know you're in a big city (I live in a small tourist town with few big stores), but if you don't have a car, it might be worthwhile for you. Just use amazon.it. I use the German site to get stuff like vacuum cleaners, kitchen appliances or tools, and some furniture. It's an easy way to comparison shop -- use google's language tools to translate.

Tomorrow we'll probably be driving over to the city rather than taking the train, as our appointment with the rental office is in the evening and we'd like to be able to have a little more freedom regarding when we come or go. My brother says we can probably stop at Miramare castle and possibly Duino castle on the way in to the city. Those I'm very much looking forward to!
I've definitely been having fun, but I'm also really looking forward to not sleeping on my brother's couch for much longer.
