HI Denisea, I'm heading to the Amalfi Coast next Monday and I used to do it the budget way with lots of planes, trains and buses. Now I am definitely in the throw $$ at it camp. I have used Francesco above was well and will be again on Monday. He is great but not sure if his company can take you from Rome as he is based in Sorrento. I am flying Delta and was forced into the 2 connections going and 1 coming home. We are flying to Napoli and then driver from there, which is what I have done last few times. It's 140 euro but there are 4 of us. I agree that the expedient and comfort is more than worth the extra cost.

Have fun on the AC - it's my favorite place in the world!

Very good - I feel sure we are going to love the AC. I just think the vistas look dazzling and add some prosecco - what's not to love? Just want to fast forward a year now to get there!!

I just returned. Flew into Naples and used positano shuttle. It was a van - driver held sign and took us to positano. - hotel Poseidon for 35 euro each. Worked well.

Denisea - Returned a few weeks ago from Italy which included six days on the AC (wonderful - do visit Ravello). After a few days in Rome, I took the fast train to Naples, and as that would be the only time in Naples, arranged with the driver Francesco Marrapese to meet me at the Archaeology Museum for the drive to Praiano. I also tweeked this ride to add a 2 hr stop at Herculaneum. Cost 200euro. The direct drive back to the Naples train station was 110euro. I highly recommend Francesco! I did consider the Positano Shuttle mentioned above but only momentarily. The TA reviews scared me away! I'm in the 'throw euro at any problem' camp, too!

Spent 17 days in Italy a couple years ago. Flew into Milan took the train to Venice for 2 days then picked up a rental and drove it to PIsa, Florence, Siena, through Tuscany, down thru Naples, to our most southern destination of Paestum then back up and around the AC stopping in Malta, Pasitano, Ravello (got engaged there ) then up to Naples, Cumae, Tivoli and finally into Rome where we dropped the car and picked up a scooter.

It was fabulous and easy. We saw so much more in the time than we could have with any other means of transportation! I would suggest a rental car. I know you said it wasn't an option...I'm just curious (don't mean to pry) but if you drive in the US...honestly it is no different. If you would drive the Pacific Coast Highway...It is completely comparable and SO fun!!

Just my 2 cents... And more than happy to share any advice on the car rental front...

While my husband is a good driver and enjoys the challenge of the Amalfi drive which we have done many times from Naples, I don't think that it's easy and if you're not comfortable with driving there, the best option is to get to Naples and hire a private driver, especially after a long trip. We like the ferries, although we haven't taken one from Naples, but they may not be a good option if you are tired.

denisea - DH and I will be vacationing in AC next year in late April. We will fly from Chicago into Rome and then take Rome Cabs (limo service) to Termini. From there we will hop on a fast train to Naples. From Naples train station we will take a private driver to our hotel in Positano. For us, this is what works best.

Belladawn...I do appreciate your sense of adventure. I have driven many places in the US but most opinions sceam not to drive to the AC. Honestly, i don't want to deal with the traffic, parking etc.... Maybe on a subsequent trip, but definitely not on our first trip. The last thing I want to after a long flight is rent a car and sort out Italian road signs, etc...

Bab706- your idea is a possibility but I am wondering how much time that will take from FCO until you get to your hotel. Hope you will share your trip details.

Denisea, the ride from FCO can vary, depending on traffic, but I would guess about 30 minutes from FCO to Termini, wait for the train, then 70 minutes for the train to Naples, then 1.5 hours from Naples to Positano, or more if there is traffic.

Thanks for the confirmation ekc...for us it's just easier (although more expensive) to just get a driver from Rome straight to Positano. On vacation - I want easier.

It is not gonna get here fast enough!

We have used the tour company Rome In Limo (RIL) and it is very good. We were transported to Positano in one of their vans and had the most delicious lunch ever. Name of the restaurant is Restaurant "La Tagliata". They also have a B&B on location. You must go there!

Denisea, here are some pictures on Flickr of our last trip to Positano. It includes photos of Le Sirenuse, Il San Pietro di Positano, and ... La Tagliata. A great trip!

") but if you drive in the US...honestly it is no different"

This is utter nonsense. It's completely different - much more difficult.
