I will be arriving Sep. 19 and departing Dec. 20. I am curious about some things, and no one here seems to have the answer.

I want to transfer money from my bank here in Iowa to one in Coleraine. Does anyone know- when you wire transfer money like that, does it automatically switch from dollars to pounds? Also, will the exchange rate suck doing it this way? Is there any other way to get all the money over there without being risky and taking it all in cash? I'm just trying to do this in the most economical way.

If anyone has experience with this and can help me, I'd really appreciate it. Thanks.

If you are studying at the University of Ulster in Coleraine I would contact them for advice as they have lots of overseas students.

There are usually large fees for wire transfers. Your bank in Coleraine will have an ATM. I suggest withdrawing the money by ATM when you get there and then deposit it in the bank.

It is unlikely that you will need a bank account in NI, unless you are planning to write cheques.

As MT suggests, use your ATM card when you need cash, and your charge card otherwise.
