Tom:
When I went to Munich last month and took The Castle Tour, which included The Neuschwanstein Castle, we ate at The HOTEL MUELLER, we had a perfect view of the castle from the sunroom dining area... beautiful setting! The food there was excellent and the place looked neat, I didn't get a chance to look into the rooms or rates, etc., but vowed to look into it if i ever go back. You might want to check into it.

Their fax is
08362/9160 99.
I recommend the Grand Hotel Sonnenbichl on Burgstrasse 97, 82467 Garmisch Partenkirchen(fone: 49-88217020) 175. DEM. This charming resort hotel was our base for the castles. The rooms are lovely with fabulous views from the balconies. If you have time you can use their bicycles, sauna, pool, etc. Friendly staff and good food. (breakfast was included in above price). If this is more than you wish to spend...there are "many" zimmers(like B&Bs) at bargain rates. Extremely clean..& good food.
We were in the Fussen area in July. The hotels are plentiful. We stayed in the next town over. Pension Charlotte which was very nice, I believe it was in schwangau, for 80DM for 2 people. The hotel had a nice view of the castle across the fields. We had no problem getting a room and it was 9:30 pm when we got there. I don't think you will have any problem with a hotel. Just get up and see the castle early in the morning to avoid the crowds.
Looking for castle HOTELS in Bavaria near "the castles". Stayed in several in the upper Rhine area but can't find any on the web or in my castle hotel directory this far south. Even near Munich would suffice. I promised my daughter a night in a castle, any to share?

I would strongly recommend that you stay in Obberamergau. The town itself is a postcard, so to wake up in the AM with such breathtaking scenery, and to wander around the town in the evening before going to bed, is such an amazing experience! The town is a very quiet town, very close to Linderhoff Castle (King Ludwig's favorite castle; do not miss!), and also close driving distance to Neuschwanstein. We stayed at a small hotel called Hotel Schilcherhof, on a main street called
Bahnhofstrasse17, phone# 0 88 22 47 40. The room was comfortable and the breakfast was excellent.
Hope this note helps.

Mustangs81 (?)
Found you a castle. Better yet a castle dating from the 1100s that became a palace in 1830. It's in the foothills of the Bavarian Forest about 50 kms southeast of Regensburg, east-northeast of Munich. Schlosshotel Egg, D-8351 Schloss Egg; Tel: (0 99 05) 2 89.

Good going! I have been by that castle years ago but it isn't listed in the new directory that I am using. Thanks for the info.
My low-budget accommodation recommendation in the vicinity of the Royal Castles is to stay in the village of Hohenschwangau (just below Neuschwanstein). Two pensions within easy walking distance of the castles are:

Pension Weiher
Hofwiesenweg 11
87645 Schwangau-Hohenschwangau
(Tel. 08362/81161)
Price approx 38 DM per person per night

Haus Magdalena
Schwangauer Strasse 11
87645 Schwangau-Hohenschwangau
(Tel. 08362/81126)
Price approx 40 DM per person per night

You save yourself parking fees plus you get a discount on castle entry fees from your hosts. Another inexpensive lodging option and interesting experience would be to try one of the farms in the area. If you think you might be interested - drop me a note and I will give you the particulars. For anyone not on a limited budget and wanting to stay near the castles - here are two more excellent possibilities (to include the aforementioned Hotel Müller)

Hotel Alpenstuben
Alpseestrasse 8
D - 87645 Schwangau/Hohenschwangau
Tel - 08362 / 98240
Fax - 08362 / 81798
Singles 45 DM to 70 DM
Doubles 90 DM to 140 DM
French and English spoken
Rooms with/without shower, balcony, phone, TV

Müller
Alpseestraße 16
D-87643 Schwangau/Hohenschwangau
Tel - 08362/81990
Fax - 08362/819913
Restaurant, Cafe
Accepts American Express, Diners Club, EuroCard, Visa
Rooms with bath/toilet/shower, phone, Minibar, TV
Singles 140 DM to 220 DM
Doubles 180 DM to 260 DM
Suites 320 DM to 450 DM
